Kunstmuseum in Bonn
One of several museums known together as “Museum Mile”, the Kunstmuseum in Bonn is a German art museum with one of the largest art collections in the country. The museum boasts a huge collection from a small variety of artists, due to its policy of buying a large assortment of each artist’s works, and only focuses on on the period following World War II to the present.
German Art at the Kunstmuseum
Though it aims to display more Germany art, the works of American painter Laura Owens have been a huge hit at the Museum, due to the vibrant colors and forms in her work. The Kunstmuseum features not only contemporary paintings and drawings, but also exhibitions that involve objects. Thomas Rentmeister’s exhibition is one of these, and contains artwork involving food and even whole rooms with materials arranged in an artistic way. The museum in Bonn maintains a small collection of high-quality photographic works by very talented German photographers, such as Andreas Gursky and tennis-icon Boris Becker. Though the video art field is becoming more and more popular, the Kunstmuseum has a video collection dating back several decades to the 1950′s and 1960′s. This collection is very large and has been excellently maintained over the years, so that its quality is still evident today.
The Videonale at the Kunstmuseum
The Kunstmuseum in Bonn is the permanent host for the Videonale, which is a famous German video art festival. In addition to video exhibitions, the Videonale offers monthly discussions on current events and art themes. The Kunstmuseum’s collection has grown to include prints, such as etchings and copper engravings. Some large wood engravings have also been recently acquired.
The Kunstmuseum in Bonn aims to bring German artists’ work to the forefront, and continually does so by adding to their vast assortment of art. Their acquisitions are not limited not only to stunning paintings, but include modern exhibits, exceptional photography, ever-popular video art, and even the more traditional prints.
The Walter König Bookshop offers a wide selection of literature about German Art after 1945, Expressionism and Video Art. For a coffee or a snack you should pay modern and streamlined café a visit. In the cold season the outside terrace is heated and gives visitors a great view into the Museums Square.
